کتاب " گسترش جهانی مرگ سیاه در اواخر سده های میانه " نخستین پژوهش منتشر شده در ایران در مورد روند پیدایش، گسترش و پیامدهای طاعون بزرگ سده های چهاردهم تا شانزدهم میلادی(هشتم تا دهم هجری) است.
در مراکز علمی و دانشگاهی اروپا و امریکا تحقیقات گسترده ای درباره ی مرگ سیاه انجام گرفته است، اما در این تحقیقات توجهی به ایرانِ بزرگ در اواخر سده های میانه نشده است. حتی بعضی از پژوهشگران خارجی موضوع گسترش طاعون در ایران را معماگونه دانسته و از چگونگی آن اظهار بی اطلاعی کرده اند.
پژوهش حاضر که توسط دکتر احمد فضلی نژاد عضو هیأت علمی گروه تاریخ دانشگاه شیراز نوشته شده است، با بهره گیری از منابع و پژوهش های تاریخ اجتماعی، تاریخ اقتصادی، تاریخ پزشکی و تاریخ سده های میانه به چگونگی پیدایش و گسترش طاعون بزرگ در جهان پرداخته و پیامدهای آن را از جنبه های گوناگون مورد بررسی قرار داده است.
انتشار طاعون در چین و آسیای مرکزی، حوزه دریای سیاه، ایران، مصر و شام و سراسر اروپا از مباحث مهم این کتاب می باشد.
کتاب در 216 صفحه توسط انتشارات دانشگاه شیراز چاپ شده است.
