Shiraz is the cradle of knowledge and the birthplace of great Persian poets and writers. The Faculty of letters was founded mainly due to its vicinity to the Tomb of Hafiz, the great Shirazi poet, and has been home to great figures of science and literature since its foundation. This faculty has 5 departments, and offers 6 undergraduate, 12 master's and 8 phD degree programs, and is now one of the premier faculties in Iran.

History:

The Faculty of Literature and Humanities is one of the oldest and most prolific faculties of Shiraz University.

 

1963: Establishment of the Faculty under the title of "Faculty of Literature and Science", in the form of a department called Persian and English Literature and Language

 1341: Establishment of two independent departments of "Persian Language and Literature" and "English Language and Literature"

 1341: Establishment of the department of Economics and Business Management

 1342: Establishment of history department

 1344: Establishment of the department of national development

 1973: Establishment of sociology study program

 1974: Establishment of the fields of demography disciplines (developed into planning and sociology departments)

 1974: Establishment of the department of "Library and Information Science" by starting the first approved degree program at the master's level

1978: Separation of the Faculty of "Literature and Science" into two independent faculties called "Faculty of Literature and Humanities" and "Faculty of Science"

 1978: Transformation of the department of "Economics" and "Business Management" into two independent departments of "Economics" and "Management and Accounting", along with the initiation of "Accounting" discipline.

 1978: Establishment of Islamic Education Department (renamed Theology and Islamic Education Department)

 1986: Mirza Shirazi Library was added to the faculty

2003: division of the faculty into two separate faculties of "Literature and Humanities" and "Social Sciences"

 

2013: Separation of "Islamic Theology and Education" sections and upgrading to "Faculty of Theology and Islamic Education"

 2014: Upgrading the field of geography to an independent department

 2017: Transfer of Geography study program to the Faculty of Social Sciences

 At present, the faculty comprises the departments of "History", "Arabic Language and Literature", "Persian Language and Literature" and "Foreign Languages and Linguistics".
